PET self-adhesive labels are label materials made of polyethylene terephthalate (PET, Polyethylene Terephthalate) film as the base material, with pressure-sensitive adhesive coated on the back and the surface treated by corona discharge or coating processing. Their structure usually includes: PET film base layer (thickness 25-150 μm), printing ink layer (optional), pressure-sensitive adhesive layer (acrylic or silicone rubber adhesive), and release paper (silicone oil film or fluorine film). The high mechanical strength, weather resistance and chemical stability of PET materials make them the preferred labels for long-term outdoor use, resistance to harsh environments or curved surface labeling, and widely used in high-end fields such as industry, automobiles, and electronics.
Core characteristics of PET self-adhesive labels
1. Physical and mechanical properties
High strength and tensile resistance:
Tensile strength ≥ 150 MPa (ordinary copperplate paper < 30 MPa), elongation at break ≤ 200%, suitable for resisting deformation when used for curved surface labeling (such as circular pipes, arc-shaped equipment);
High stiffness (100 μm PET bending stiffness is approximately 1.5 mN·m), can be used for self-standing labels or scenarios requiring anti-foldability (such as tool nameplates).
Temperature resistance and weather resistance:
Regular type - 40°C to 120°C, special modified PET can withstand 150°C high temperature (such as engine compartment labels), short-term 200°C non-melting;
Excellent UV resistance performance, outdoor exposure for 1 year color difference ΔE ≤ 3 (tested according to GB/T 16422.3), suitable for long-term outdoor identification (such as traffic sign labels).
2. Chemical and environmental resistance
Chemical resistance:
Resistant to acids (pH 2-12), alkalis (10% NaOH solution immersion for 24 hours without swelling), solvents (ethanol, gasoline wiping 50 times surface unchanged), suitable for industrial equipment in contact with oil or chemicals (such as oil bottle labels);
Excellent moisture resistance, water vapor transmission rate < 5 g/(m²·24h) (23°C, 90% RH), much lower than copperplate paper (> 50 g/(m²·24h)), suitable for humid environments (such as bathroom product labels).
Tear resistance and wear resistance:
Tear strength ≥ 30 N/mm (GB/T 16578), surface hardness reaches 4H (pencil hardness test), wear resistance ≥ 1000 times (Taber wear test), suitable for frequent contact scenarios (such as instrument panel button labels).
3. Printing and processing performance
Surface treatment and ink compatibility:
Surface tension after corona discharge ≥ 42 mN/m, suitable for UV inks, solvent-based inks and screen printing, ink adhesion strength ≥ 4 grades (test by hundred grid), color durability up to 5-8 years (outdoor);
Can achieve various substrate effects:
Transparent PET: transmittance ≥ 90%, suitable for perspective labeling (such as mineral water bottle body labels showing the contents of the bottle);
White PET: covering power ≥ 99% (ISO brightness), suitable for graphic printing on dark substrates;
Silver PET: aluminum coating layer reflection rate ≥ 85%, creating a metallic texture (such as electronic product LOGO labels).
Cutting and labeling adaptability:
Suitable for precise cutting (minimum hole diameter 0.5 mm), no burrs at the edge, suitable for fine printing such as QR codes, micro text, etc.;
Gel coat can be customized:
Permanent acrylic glue: holding strength ≥ 72 hours (GB/T 4851), suitable for permanent fixation (such as fixed asset nameplates);
Removable glue: peel force 0.5-1.0 N/25mm, no residue when removed (such as temporary warranty labels for electronic products).
4. Environmental and special functions Recyclability: The PET substrate can be recycled through physical crushing (recycled PET is used in the textile industry, etc.), but products with silicone rubber coating need to be treated separately; water-based acrylic PET labels are gradually being promoted to reduce VOC emissions.
Special functional coatings:
Anti-static PET: Surface resistance 10⁶ - 10⁹ Ω, suitable for electronic component labels (such as chip packaging);
Flame-retardant PET: Complies with UL94 V-0 standard, used for electrical equipment labels;
Anti-counterfeiting PET: Contains microstructures or fluorescent coatings, allowing for the printing of anti-counterfeiting patterns (such as drug traceability labels).
