Special glossy self-adhesive labels are a type of self-adhesive label material made from special glossy paper (also known as "copperplate paper" or "high-gloss copperplate paper"), with pressure-sensitive adhesive (adhesive) coated on the back and a release paper (base paper) attached. The base material of special glossy paper is a highly polished paper formed by coating a layer of white paint (mainly composed of kaolin, calcium carbonate, etc.) on the surface of the original paper and then undergoing super calendering treatment. It has the natural characteristics of paper and a smooth surface texture, and is mainly used in label scenarios with high requirements for printing effect and appearance.
Core characteristics of special glossy self-adhesive labels
1. Outstanding printing effect, strong color expression ability
High surface gloss: After super calendering, the surface of special glossy paper is fine and smooth, with high whiteness (usually above 90%), which can fully restore the color saturation and layering of the printing ink, especially suitable for full-color printing, gradient colors or fine patterns (such as product LOGOs, promotional illustrations), after printing, the patterns are clear and bright, and the visual effect is close to the texture of a photo.
Balanced ink absorption: The coating layer avoids the color dullness caused by excessive ink absorption of ordinary paper, and can allow the ink to dry quickly and firmly adhere, reducing smudging and color fading problems, suitable for various mainstream printing processes such as offset printing, flexographic printing, and digital printing, and can undergo secondary processing such as hot stamping and UV local polishing to enhance the sophistication of the label.
2. Limited application scenarios due to paper base material characteristics but wide adaptability
Light and lightweight, moderate adhesion: As a paper-based material, special glossy self-adhesive labels are thin and light, have moderate adhesion to flat or slightly curved surfaces (such as paper boxes, paper cartons, glass bottles, etc.), and are not likely to after sticking; however, they have poor flexibility and cannot adapt to curved surfaces, concave surfaces, or frequently bent scenarios (such as plastic bottles, pipes).
Weak weather resistance: Essentially paper, they are not waterproof or resistant to moisture, and are prone to water absorption and deformation, wrinkling, and even ink smearing when exposed to water or high humidity environments; they also do not withstand high temperatures (over 50°C may cause color change or curling), are afraid of direct sunlight (long-term exposure to sunlight may cause fading and brittleness), and are therefore suitable for short-term use in indoor and dry environments.
3. Moderate cost,value for money
The production process of special glossy paper is mature, the raw material cost is lower than that of PET and PVC plastic substrates, and the printing processing difficulty is low, with moderate overall cost, suitable for mass production of medium-to-high-end paper-based packaging labels (such as food gift boxes, cosmetic boxes, health supplement boxes), while ensuring the appearance texture and controlling costs.
4. Good environmental friendliness and recyclability
The base material is made of plant fibers, if using environmentally friendly inks and pressure-sensitive adhesives, the overall can be naturally degraded (or recycled along with the packaging) and has a smaller environmental burden, which is suitable for scenarios with basic requirements for environmental friendliness (such as food, daily necessities, etc.), but it should be noted that if stuck on non-recyclable plastic or other materials, it may affect the overall recycling efficiency.
5. Clearly limited, pay attention to usage conditions
Easy to tear, not resistant to friction: The paper base material has poor tear resistance, and if the label is pulled or scratched by external force, it is likely to be damaged; although the surface is smooth, its wear resistance is far lower than that of plastic substrates, and long-term frequent contact may cause pattern wear.
High requirements for the surface of the adhered object: It is only suitable for sticking to clean, flat, and dry surfaces. If the adhered object has oil stains, dust, or moisture, the adhesion strength will significantly decrease, and it is prone to detachment.
