Synthetic paper self-adhesive is a type of self-adhesive material with synthetic paper as the base material, with pressure-sensitive adhesive coated on the back and a release paper attached on top. Synthetic paper is not the traditional plant-based paper, but a film-like material made from high molecular resins such as polypropylene (PP) and polyethylene (PE) through processes such as melting extrusion and stretching. It combines the printing adaptability of paper with the physical properties of plastic, and is one of the upgraded and alternative materials for paper-based self-adhesive products.


Core characteristics of synthetic paper self-adhesive


1. Physical properties: Combining the advantages of paper and plastic

Weather resistance far exceeds that of traditional paper:

Waterproof and moisture-proof: Synthetic paper is a high-molecular material and does not absorb water. Even if it is soaked in water, it will not soften, break, or smudge the writing, suitable for humid environments (such as refrigerators, kitchens, and swimming pool perimeters) or outdoor scenarios (such as outdoor advertisements, garden labels).

Tear resistance and wear resistance: The tear resistance is 5-10 times that of ordinary paper, and it is not easy to be damaged by daily friction and folding; the surface is smooth and tough, and the scratch resistance is better than coated board paper. The label can remain intact for a long time after use.

Temperature resistance and anti-aging: It can be used within the range of -30℃ to 80℃, and it is not prone to cracking at low temperatures, nor does it deform at high temperatures; it has certain resistance to ultraviolet rays, and is not prone to fading when used outdoors (some synthetic paper with added UV-resistant additives can further extend the durability life).

Texture close to paper, flexible adhesion:

Although synthetic paper is a plastic-based substrate, it is lightweight (with a density lower than most plastic films), has a similar feel to paper, has a certain stiffness and can be folded and curled, and can adapt to flat pasting as well as slightly curved surfaces (such as cosmetic bottles, gift boxes), and is not likely to arched up after pasting.


2. Printing and appearance: Strong adaptability, diverse styles

Printing adaptability is excellent:

The surface is specially treated (such as coating modification), and the adsorption force of the ink is close to that of paper, compatible with various processes such as offset printing, intaglio printing, digital printing, and screen printing, can clearly present fine patterns, text, and gradient colors, and the ink dries quickly, suitable for mass production.

Appearance style is flexible:

It can be made into white, natural color (transparent / semi-transparent), or color. The surface can be treated with matte, high gloss, or frosted effects, and some synthetic paper can simulate the texture of kraft paper or coated board paper, balancing "paper texture" and "plastic performance".

Supports heat stamping, laminating, local UV treatment, etc., enhancing the three-dimensionality and sophistication of the label, suitable for high-end packaging scenarios (such as luxury gift boxes, fine stationery).


3. Environmental and cost: Balancing practicality and sustainability

Environmental performance is superior to traditional plastics:

Most synthetic paper does not contain plant fibers and does not require deforestation, and can be recycled and reused; some products add inorganic fillers such as calcium carbonate, and after disposal, they can slowly degrade in the natural environment (note: only "degradable synthetic paper" has this characteristic, while ordinary synthetic paper still needs to be classified for recycling), having less environmental burden than PVC and other non-degradable plastics.

Cost is moderate:

It is more expensive than ordinary coated board self-adhesive, but lower than PET and PVC self-adhesive, with a cost-performance ratio between paper and high-end plastics, suitable for scenarios requiring durability but with limited budgets.


4. Limitations to note

High-temperature resistance is limited: Long-term exposure to environments above 80℃ (such as high-temperature sterilization cabinets, boiler perimeters) may cause deformation and shrinkage, and is not suitable for direct contact with high-temperature objects.

Tensile strength is slightly lower than thick cardboard: Although it has a certain tensile strength, the thickness is usually 50-150μm, and thicker synthetic paper (such as 200μm or above) is more expensive, and has less compatibility with "hard label" requirements (such as thick gift box labels).

Toughness decreases at low temperatures: At temperatures below -30℃, it may lose some flexibility, and in extreme cases, it may crack.
