The film adhesive is a single-sided material evenly coated with pressure-sensitive adhesive, combined with release liner to form a composite material. It is the core base material of the self-adhesive label industry.
The film adhesive adhesion through pressure, eliminating the need for additional gluing. It can be directly printed, die-cut, and labeled.
It features differentiated properties such as water resistance, tear resistance, temperature resistance and weather resistance, and is widely used in product identification, outer packaging labels, industrial identification, anti-counterfeiting stickers and other scenarios.
According to the type of substrate, the mainstream categories include BOPP film, PET film, PE film, synthetic paper film, pearlescent film, and brushed silver film, etc.
I. For whom is the film adhesive designed?
1)Label printing factory, die-cutting processing factory
Require flexible and versatile base materials that are suitable for printing, have high adaptability for cutting and laminating, and are easy to be segmented and die-cut. They can handle orders for labels for daily care, electronics, and food products;
2)Brand manufacturing enterprises
Need customized label materials that are compatible with automated labeling equipment and can meet the requirements of special usage environments such as storage, outdoor, refrigeration, and high temperature;
3)Exporting manufacturers
The materials need to comply with SGS environmental testing standards, be free of bisphenol A, and meet the compliance requirements for entry into the markets of Europe, Southeast Asia, etc.;
4)Advertising and packaging enterprises
Require transparent, matte, silver, pearlescent and other special appearance films to create high-end packaging visual effects;
5)Material traders
Seek stable supply sources, multiple specifications of spot goods, and support for small batch customization and cutting from the original suppliers.
II. Three main types of adhesives: Each has distinct characteristics and is suitable for different needs.
According to different usage requirements, there are mainly three common types of film adhesive, each with its own unique characteristics.
1) Pressure-sensitive adhesive: The most convenient self-adhesive product
This type of adhesive is the one you are most familiar with - it's what we commonly refer to as "self-adhesive". It doesn't require heating or waiting for it to dry; you simply press it and it sticks right away, which is very convenient. Items like transparent tape, label stickers, and phone protective films all use this kind of adhesive.
Its advantages include simple construction, strong adhesion, and no marks left when removed. The matte laser paper, synthetic paper and thermal paper used by instiker all employ high-quality pressure-sensitive glue to ensure the adhesion effect. However, it should be noted that this glue is not very heat-resistant. If placed in a very hot environment, it may gradually lose its adhesiveness.

2) Hot Melt Adhesive: An environmentally friendly adhesive that "melts upon heating"
Hot melt glue is usually in a solid state. When used, it is heated to melt into a glue, and it solidifies within a few seconds after being applied. It sticks extremely firmly. Moreover, it does not contain solvents and has no pungent smell, making it very environmentally friendly.
Instiker is particularly specialized in hot melt adhesives. The self-developed hot melt adhesives for kraft paper and coated paper have a very good reputation in the industry. These adhesives are suitable for use in packaging, book binding and other occasions that require rapid production and strong adhesion. The drawback is that they require specialized heating equipment, and it's not as flexible to use as other adhesives.
3) Solvent-based glue: The choice of professionals
This type of adhesive has the strongest bonding force and is the most durable. It was previously widely used in the automotive and electronics industries. However, because it contains volatile solvents, it is not very environmentally friendly. As a result, the number of users is decreasing, and it is gradually being replaced by more environmentally friendly products.
III. Important Reminder: The film is not plastic!
Many people consider plastic film and film adhesive to be the same thing. However, they are actually two completely different substances.
Plastic film refers to ordinary film materials, such as plastic bags. It is inherently non-adhesive. While adhesive film is made by coating a layer of glue on top of plastic film (or other materials), thus giving it adhesive properties.
In simple terms, plastic film is the raw material, while adhesive film is the finished product. The self-adhesive labels we use, as well as phone protection films, are all adhesive films, not just simple plastic films.
IV. Solving practical problems: These three of our products are very reliable.
Having understood the basic knowledge, let's take a look at what practical problems instiker can solve for you. The following three products are all developed to address common pain points.
1)Plain Laser Paper / White Grid Background: Ensuring High-End Packaging Never Fails
Those who produce high-end cosmetics or gift packaging are well aware that laser labels may look nice, but they often encounter two troublesome issues: Firstly, they tend to lift up the edges when stuck on, and over time, the edges will become raised; Secondly, they cannot be adhered evenly on the curved surfaces of bottles and jars, which affects the appearance.
Our plain laser paper is specifically designed to solve these problems. We coated a special pressure-sensitive adhesive on the high-quality laser film, which has extremely stable adhesion. Once stuck, it firmly grabs the surface and is not prone to lifting. Moreover, the thickness of the adhesive layer is well controlled, and it can also be adhered very smoothly on the curved surfaces. As a result, the product's quality improves, and the after-sales problems are reduced.
2)Synthetic paper / white grid base: The "tough guy" of outdoor signage
What are the biggest concerns for outdoor labels? Sun exposure, rain, and oil stains! Ordinary paper labels will fade and tear within a few months in the outdoors, and the text becomes illegible, causing a lot of inconvenience.
Our synthetic paper labels are specifically designed for harsh environments. This material is not afraid of water or oil, and it cannot be torn. The patterns and text printed on it are not prone to fading even under the effects of sunlight and rain. Many chemical plants, logistics companies, and outdoor equipment manufacturers are using our synthetic paper labels, eliminating the need to replace labels frequently.
3)Three heat-sensitive paper (yellow background): Heat-sensitive printed "armor for self-protection"
The supermarket receipt, the delivery slip, and the test report are all printed on heat-sensitive paper. Ordinary heat-sensitive paper has a major drawback: it is prone to water, oil, and alcohol. If your hands are a little sweaty or if you drip a little water, the handwriting becomes blurry and the important information becomes illegible.
Our triple-resistant heat-sensitive paper has a special coating that truly ensures water resistance, oil resistance, and alcohol resistance. The yellow base paper is also particularly eye-catching, making it convenient for classification management. Now, many supermarkets, logistics companies, and hospitals are using it, and there is no longer any worry about the disappearance of the receipt handwriting.
V. Summary: Choosing the Right Materials Leads to Double the Effort with Half the Work
Film bonding may seem simple, but there are actually many nuances. The key is to understand your own requirements: do you need it to be convenient and fast, or durable and long-lasting? Is it for indoor use or outdoor use? Is it for an ordinary environment or a special one?
Pressure-sensitive adhesive is the most convenient to use, hot-melt adhesive bonds the strongest and is the most environmentally friendly. Solvent-based adhesives are now being used less and less. The most important thing is to clearly distinguish between film adhesives and plastic films. Don't buy the wrong material.
Instiker specializes in researching these issues. The matte laser paper, synthetic paper, and three-proof heat-sensitive paper introduced above are all products developed by us based on the actual difficulties of our customers. Using these materials, you will find that production efficiency has increased, post-sale problems have decreased, and product quality has become more stable.
Good materials bring good results. On the path of film bonding, choosing the right partner is very important. We are willing to use professional technology and reliable products to become your reliable partner. If you have any specific questions, feel free to talk to us at any time. We will definitely provide you with the most suitable solution.
